Just what I was looking for !, April 17, 2013

Wow, what a book. I’ve read so many music theory and guitar scale books but never a book that put it all together for me. Now I finally understand when to use what scales over what chords. If you are a beginner, this is not the right book for you. If you are an intermediate player who understands chord and harmony theory but want to be able to apply your knowledge to ear playing or improvisation, this is your book. This book is fun to read and the written exercises really test your skills. It covers everything I’ve been trying to learn. Major scales, all three minor scales, modes, power chords, jazz and more. The book has opened a whole new world of skills I’ve never had before. Thank you Mueller and Schroedl for the best addition to my music library in many years !

This book looked a little basic for me at first glance, but frankly, I was shocked at how much of my scale-to-chord chops had fallen through the cracks over the years (30 years of pro playing!), or how much chord/scale relationship theory I had only glossed over. This book, well-written and well-organized, resulted in more “aha!” moments than I care to mention (!), and has informed my soloing and signature lick strategy on several recordings since; it’s also improved my daily workouts with the iReal B app immeasurably. Don’t let it’s thin profile mislead you; this is seriously packed with essential information, though it’s so well-condensed and explained, and so guitarist-friendly, you’ll never feel overwhelmed. I even take it on the road for back-of-the-van reading, too–drill, baby, drill. . . .

This is a great tool for anybody looking to improve their knowledge in music theory and on the fretboard! It has tons of information in a small amount of pages. I was very happy to see that it has activities for the reader as well. It will give you one or two chords and have you fill in the rest in the key but nothing is thrown at you too quickly. There are many examples and charts to make sure you understand the theory. Definetely a great buy for any guitarist, bassist, pianist, etc. out there! Great book for all musicians!
