I was expecting a little more from this DVD, as I’m not a newcomer to the bass. For some reason I expected lessons that would be a bit more intense. A lot of this would be more suited to beginners.

In saying that, though, there are some good techniques taught, such as Doug’s False Harmonic & Flamenco Slap. I was hoping for a little more focus on right-hand slap & pop technique, but this was somewhat lacking.

Still, I did learn some new things, so by & large it was worth the price to me.

I came across this and in 2012 its cheaper than lunch so I ordered it. Nothing to lose. I’ve played music off and on since I was a child and bass for the last two years. I took lessons in the classic style of the ’50s and ’60s blues and R’n’B. I was hoping this “new dimensions” would get me into the more modern bass sounds.

Plus: Some interesting right hand techniques are discussed
Plus: Important ideas like playing with a drummer are discussed that are hard to come by
Plus: Some ideas for rock / hip hop / funk are demonstrated
    Plus: The guy is entertaining

Minus: The chapters discussing the areas mentioned are very short. 5 minutes tops.
Minus: No depth the chapters. A single example doesn’t cut it.
Minus: Most of the ideas are fundamentals and geared towards a player under six months or a year. More advanced ideas please.
Minus: There is boring DVD extra of some lame guy interviewing him lobbing weak questions. More playing time instead!

This DVD could have been so much more but isn’t. I think that is why it is so cheap but I would pay more for a better DVD. I’d say if you’ve been playing under a year this is a great buy. If you’re a better player but in the Motown style then this could show you the unique ways to get sounds out of the bass. Strong intermediate players can skip.

Overall it was fun and less than a movie out to learn some new ideas.
